"A number of phenomena in various eukaryotic organisms has been described showing that epigenetic (developmental) information can be transmitted in both cell lineages and into the sexual progeny. In mammals (and in plant endosperm) a number of genes is imprinted: their expression is dependent on the parent-of-origin. Processes leading to heritable gene inactivation are often correlated with DNA methylation. In our recent experiments on a dioecious plant Melandrium album we generated data indicating a controlling role of DNA methylation in sex expression. In this project we propose to study inheritance of the 5-azacytidine induced hermaphroditic trait and methylation patterns to determine whether the genomic imprinting as described for mammals, have analogously evolved as an accompanying process of sexual separation in dioecious plants."@en . .
