"Injury of the adult spinal cord invariably results in the loss of neurons and the degeneration of axonal processes involved in the lesion. For functional regeneration and tissue repair, different types of cells have been used. In the proposed project, we will compare different types of progenitor cells, isolated from 3 sources of stem cells for cell therapies (embryonic, fetal and adult stem cells). The regenerative potential of these cells will be assessed in an experimental model of SCI (balloon-induced spinal cord compression lesion). We will evaluate the RESCUE as well as the REPAIR effect of the cells. In addition, cells will be seeded into polymer hydrogels to obtain 3D cell-polymer constructs. These constructs will be used to bridge a spinal cord lesion. Functional outcome will be correlated with histological and MR findings. We believe that this project will significantly contribute to our knowledge of the mechanisms of spinal cord injury and repair."@en .
