"Binary nucleation is an important mechanism of formation of atmospheric aerosols, which influence human health and global climate. The urgent demand for nucleation rate data for atmospherically relevant systems (mixtures of air with vapors of water, sulfuric and nitric acids, ammonia etc.) can only be satisfied by development of new experimental methods and devices. Proposed project is based on the excellence of both laboratoires in the fields of fluid dynamics, transport phenomena, and aerosol science. It comprises four tasks: (i.) Development of a Laminar Co-Flow Tube, a device to study binary nucleation using an entirely new method. Flow visualization will be used to find the limits of stability and CFD methods will be applied to compute the flow filed. (ii.) Improvement of the Shock-Tube method.
