Functional molecules will be synthesized possessing the following properties: (i) the conjugated polymer backbone capable of transporting polarons on the application of the electric field; (ii) photochromic side groups capable of changing their dipole moments by the action of the light; the charge carrier transport in the main chain will depend on the electron-phonon interacion; the light-induced dipole in the side group desreases the charge carrier velocity in the backbone; the basic physical phenomena affecting the construction of the modulator will be studied: charge carrier transport, influence of polar impurities, formation of polarons, formation of traps, and charge localization and its influence on charge carrier mobility.
