"Main investigation activities in the field of artherosclerosis are concentrated on genetical factors of atherosclerotic process and non-invasive detection of premature atherosclerosis in peripheral vessels yet before development of clinical comlications. In the biochemical field attention is focused on reverse cholesterol transport. The main objective of our project is a complex study of the process of atherosclerosis from genetical, biochemical, preclinical and clinical point of view in a Czech population and in the high-risk individuals. Distribution of polymorphism of genes coding for apolipoprotein E and angiotensin-1-converting enzyme will be evaluated, together with the distribution of values representing reverse cholesterol transporand density of LDL-particles; preclinical %22surrogate endpoints%22 will be expressed as an intima-media thickness of carotid arteries measured by ultrasound.
