"Alpha-Tomatine, the major saponin of tomato, as well as its aglycon, tomatidine, were showed to exhibit a wide variety of health-promoting properties, including the effect against cancer cells. In experiments in vitro, they can suppress invasion, metastasis and progression of cancer as well as cancer resistance to multiple different drugs. However, despite the very encouraging data from in vitro studies and the relatively low toxicity, neither alphatomatine nor tomatidine have hitherto been studied sufficiently in a disease model of cancer in vivo. Our preliminary results in vivo show a significant inhibitory effect of alpha-tomatine on cancer growth in tumour bearing mice, the same effect as doxorubicin at similar doses. The present project aims at evaluating the anticancer effect of alpha-tomatine and tomatidine as well as of their combinations with classical anticancer agents in vivo, and contributing to a better understanding of their mechanism of action in a cancer cell by performing several experiments in vitro."@en . .
