"We propose to explore modifications of biomacromolecules, containing 1,2-diol groups, with six-valent osmium nitrogenous ligand complexes [Os(VI)L]. The adducts will be analyzed with electrochemical, spectroscopic, immunochemical or other suitable methods. These modifications have been only scarcely explored as yet. On the other hand, the labeling of nucleic acids and proteins with eight-valent osmium ligand complexes [Os(VIII)L] developed in our laboratory have been used in analysis of these molecules already for a longer time and Os(VIII)L are established probes of DNA structure. Os(VIII)L react with pyrimidine bases in DNA and RNA, and with tryptophan residues in proteins. In contrast Os(VI)L react with 1,2-diols (glycols). Thus Os(VI)L can be applied for different purposes than Os(VIII)L.
