"The tegument of tapeworms (Cestoda) is covered with unique structures, called microtriches. These structures are multifunctional and play a role in absorption, digestion, excretion, protection and attachment. Microtriches vary considerably in structure, dimension and density between individual cestode groups and also between different regions of tapeworms. Although only limited data are available on the ultrastructure of microtriches, it is supposed that they are of systematic and phylogenetic importance. In addition, most existing information about microthrix fine structure was inferred from scanning electron microscopical (SEM) observations and data based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are scarce or missing. Therefore, the main aim of the project is to obtain data on the ultrastructure of microtriches in the basal groups of the Cestoda (Gyrocotylidea, Amphilinidea, Caryophyllidea, Spathebothriidea and Pseudophyllidea) using both SEM and TEM.
