"Phylum Apicomplexa consists of more then 4600 identified protozoan parasites. Many of them are considered as pathogens of domestic animals and man. Current classification is based mostly o biological and morphological characters and, in many cases, does not reflect the phylogeny. Majority of available information is based on studies of limited number of species and generalisation of these knowledge to the entire family leads to frequent mistakes. Monoxenous coccidia of poikiloterms represent without anydoubt the less studied group within the family. However, comparison with coccidia of homeioterm vertebrates clearly indicates, that coccidia parasitising poikiloterms are the most diversified group containing several evolutionary lineages. Proposed project is direct continuation of research on coccidian parasites of poikiloterm hosts which is carried out since 1994.
