"The purpose of long-term tree breeding programs is to provide sustainable genetic response over many generations while maintaining reasonable level of gene diversity. Breeding programs provide a basis to accelerate forest productivity in many countries throughout the world. Stochastic models are used as a tool to optimize the long-term response to artificial selection. Currently, new biotechnological methods are becoming available to the forest industry sector. These methods (somatic embryogenesis, marker-aided selection, etc.) promise significant acceleration of genetic response in traditional programs. The purpose of this project is to (1) quantitatively evaluate the utility of somatic embryogenesis in a long-term tree breeding program; (2) develop new methodologies to enhance traditional tree-breeding schemes. Results will lead to higher efficiency of forest tree breeding, enhancing the forest productivity in commercial plantations, and consequently protecting valuable forest ecosystems."@en . .
