Animals can navigate to both perceptible (cued navigation) and imperceptible goals (place navigation). In the latter case, they use so-called %22cognitive maps%22, i.e. mental representations ofspace. Two modes of place navigation exist: allothesis and idiothesis. Allothesis involves perception of external cues and their integration into a map, in which the subject localizes itself. Idiothesis is based on integration if kinaesthetic signalsgenerated by motion and it allows the subject to return to starting point of the motion. We have found in recent experiments that both systems interact, support each other, but that they can be, however, expressed autonomously. Using behavioral methodsdeveloped in our laboratory it was found that both distant and local (e.g. olfactory) exteroceptive cues are used to correct errors during idiothetic navigation.
