"Iron ions play a key catalytic role in the production of highly toxic hydroxyl radicals, responsible for the heart injury caused by oxidative stress. This takes place in a number of cardiovascular pathologies, including the cardiomyopathy induced by anthracycline cytostatics. The main purpose of this project is to study the possible prevention of these damages using novel iron chelators of the aroylhydrazone group. These substances are lipophilic, they readily cross cell membranes and posses high iron-chelating efficacy. An in vitro model for the study of chelators at the level of cardiac cell cultures will be established, and their effects on the cardiomyocytes' injury caused by oxidative stress and anthracyclines will be investigated.
