"The aim of the proposed research project is to obtain the normative data on the size, shape, sexual dimorphism and growth of the palate in healthy subjects. Maxillary dental stone casts of male and female subjects of different ages (5, 7, 10, 12, 15 and19 years) will be included in the study. The dental casts will be analysed three-dimensionally using Fourier Transform Profilometry. Newly developed measuring software constructs the transversal sections trough the 3-D model of the palate and measurestheir profiles in detail. A total of 271 variables will be assessed in each palate examined. Normative data are a prerequisite for detection of deviations in different pathological conditions and the recognition of their consequences and impact for thepatient. They are also essential for evaluation of the growth and development of the palate within the framework of surgical and orthodontical therapy of patients with orofacial clefts and different malocclusions.
