"More than 15% couples worldwide suffer from infertility, with substantial fraction ascribed to male infertility. Male infertility has frequently genetic and even mendelian basis, but the etiology can be rarely assessed directly. On the other hand, mutations in model organism have been proven as important tools for uncovering gene function, in today's era of functional genomics. Aim of this project is to gain insight into the molecular mechanisms underlying impairment of spermatogenesis and resulting male infertility in the hd rat, carrying a mutation in LOC303240 gene and to provide data about the function of wild-type LOC303240 allele in the regulation of spermatogenesis by means of immunofluorescence microscopy, transcriptomic and proteomic methods.The output of the project may increase our knowledge in basic cellular mechanisms, especially in regulation of spermatogenesis, and perhaps even with possible impact on human reproduction health."@en . . .
