"African mole-rats (Bathyergidae, Rodentia) represent an excellent example of a range of behavioural and physiological adaptations to life in subterranean ecotope. The goal of the project is to study biology and the adaptations of the solitary Afrotropical silvery mole-rat (Heliophobius argenteocinereus) in its natural environment and in captivity. Spatial and temporal patterns of circadian activity and use of burrow system will be studied in the field as well as in captivity. Additional fieldstudies will focus mainly on mapping of distribution of food supply across different habitats of the silvery mole-rats to test a hypothesis about the origin of sociality in the African mole-rats as an adaptation to low and unpredictable food supply. Experimental part of the project will also test discrimination and searching of food, spatial orientation and energetic demands of different activities.
