"Convergent plate boundaries, consisting of subduction zones and magmatic arcs, represent the most important sites of mass transfer, chemical differentiation and crustal growth on the Earth. Our interpretation of geochemical cycling and transport as well as geodynamic computational modeling require a common basis of phase-equilibrium, thermochemical and thermophysical properties of solid, melt and fluid phases, which serve as process constraints or model parameters. This project will develop new equations of state for aqueous fluids at wide ranges of pressures and concentrations. It focuses on a new formulation of reference-state, charging and non-solvation contributions and it combines the infinite-dilution and excess mixing properties into a self-consistent formalism for speciation and equilibria of fluids to very high pressures. It includes a complementary study of thermodynamic properties of chlorine-bearing polymerized melts by treating the short-range ordering in the melt structure with the aim to predict fluid-melt interactions at high pressures and magmatic degassing in the crust."@en .
