It is produced from xanthin by the enzyme xanthine oxidoreductase. Uric acid is known to be potent antioxidant with ability to scavenge wide variety of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. Ithas significant protective effect in pathological states in which peroxynitrite-induced injury is involved. Conversely, high plasma level of uric acid is considered to be a risk factor for development of endothelial dysfunction and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Although the relationship between CVD and hyperuricemia was shown, a causal relationship was not reliably proved yet. Thus, it is not clear if hyperuricemia is real independent risk factor for development of CVD, or only an innocent marker. The aim of this project is to clarify the role of uric acid in healthy and dysfunctional endothelium, and judge, if hyperuricemia may be an independent risk factor for the development of endothelial dysfunction and CVD."@en .
