"1"^^ . . . "Two-component systems are complex signal transduction modules composed of many interacting domains. The two conserved domains that give these systems their name have catalytic functions. The conserved histidine kinase domain catalyzes the transfer of agamma phosphoryl group from MgATP to a histidine residue. The second type, the response regulator domains, also function as enzymes. They catalyze the transfer of phosphoryl groups from phosphohistidines in the kinases to a highly conserved aspartateresidue at their active sites. The use of two-component systems to regulate virulence has proved to be an important aspect of pathogenesis. Our preliminary results proved the existence of the two-component system also in Bartonella henselae. The aim ofthe project outlined here is to further characterize the basic biochemical properties of this two-component system and to rove the presence of the transmembranal domains at the N-terminal.
