"Ionizing radiation is an important tool in treatment of many tumour diseases. During research supported by grant GACR 202/01/0016 we proved that ionizing radiation induces in dose dependent manners two types of apoptosis (premitotic and postmitotic) incells of human leukemia HL-60. Ionizing radiation belongs among genotoxic stressors, inducing apoptosis by damage of nuclear DNA, which activates so called mitochondrial pathway. In this pathway mitochondrial potential decreases, different substances arereleased from mitochondria to cytosol and caspase 9 is activated. Caspase 9 then activates effector caspase 3. Second apoptotic pathway begins by activation of so called %22death receptors%22, f.e. CD95, TNF alpha receptor or TRAIL. This activation resultsin direct activation of caspase 8, which activates effector caspase 3.
