This project intends to identify molecular mechanisms of left-right asymmetry and development of preoral pit in the amphioxus anterior region utilizing a set of loss- and gain-of-function experiments affecting this gene and its upstream regulator Nodal. Moreover, analysis of Pitx regulatory elements aims to identify developmental functions and putative evolutionary conservation of this gene to uncover roles of the amphioxus Pitx in anterior and left specification at the base of chordate phylogeny and prior to evolution of vertebrate lineage."@en .
