"The electrodialysis (ED) is mainly used for the fresh water production by brackish water desalination. A significance of this technology rapidly increases with growing problems of securing fresh water resources of sufficient quality and capacity. An increasing capacity of the ED unit, however, brings complications with nonuniform distribution of process solutions and electric current leading to reduction of process reliability and efficiency. Aims of the proposed project are: a) basic understanding of relationships between the nonuniform distribution of the flux of crucial quantities and efficiency of ED, and b) confirmation of their validity in a pilot scale. Measurements of local quantities in the pilot ED unit at different operating conditions will be performed. The obtained data will be used for validation of a 3-dimensional mathematical model of ED. This model will be used for further study of ED in extreme cases; experimentally unfeasible in pilot scale.
