"The proposed grant objective examines the possibility of application of new and progressive types of thin films in the field of cutting tools. PVD method will be used to prepare not only binary TiN films, but also sandwich films containing chemicallydifferent nitrides, or additional in-between ceramic oxides layers. Furthermore, silicon-containing films will be investigated, which satisfy the criteria of nanomaterials, while consisting of periodically repeated layers. Sintered carbide and Si3N4ceramics for machining will be used as substrates. Due to various types of films applied, it will be necessary to rely on analyses describing mechanical properties in establishing optimal deposition parameters. Among those properties the most importantones are nanohardness, adhesive-cohesive behaviour and tribological properties.
