One of the limitations of measurement methods in use is a direct contact between velocity measurement device and flowing liquidleading to maintenance difficulties. Thus, the project presented deals with design, laboratory testing and field verification of a non-intrusive discharge measurement method based on digital image processing of the free-surface and particle tracking of floatable solids of natural origin. Numerical analysis of the solids movement leads to estimation and visualization of the free-surface velocity profile across a given channel gauging section. Based on theoretical considerations of a turbulent boundary layer, numerical modelling methods and cross section description, the instantaneous discharge can be evaluated.
