"Epidemic antibiotic resistance plasmids - evolution, plasticity and fitness"@en . . . "The worldwide dissemination of emerging resistance mechanisms via successful genetic elements is growing concern in current medicine, with the huge impact on health of humans, animals and the environment. Understanding how antibiotic resistance genes are mobilized and spread in bacteria is a desirable pre-requisite to combat antibiotic resistance. The project will be focused on various aspects of epidemic plasmids associated with resistance to clinically important cephalosporins, carbapenems and fluoroquinolones, isolated from various bacteria and wide sources. Structure, plasticity and evolution of the epidemic plasmids as well as their potential to spread and persist in bacterial communities in the absence of antibiotic pressure will be studied. The role of additional accessory mechanisms and factors in the plasmid maintenance, transfer and fitness of bacterial hosts will be evaluated along with the resistance to antibiotics. The project will bring new knowledge on traits and features of epidemic plasmids that are behind their success."@en .
