"Oxidized phospholipids (oxPL) are now known to be involved in several pathological conditions, such as atherosclerosis, inflammation, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and Alzheimer\u2019s disease. However, a coherent overall view of the causalities and mechanisms is lacking, mainly because of insufficient understanding of the cellular as well as molecular mechanisms. The OXPL consortium represents an integrated interdisciplinary approach of European research laboratories already active in this field, together with additional skills brought into the project by groups representing state-of-the-art expertise in method and instrumentation development for the characterization of biomolecules, their interactions and localization in cells.The applicant\u2019s laboratory will mainly characterise the influence of oxPL on structural parameters in model and living cell membranes and their fate in living cells \u00A0by fluorescence \u00A0techniques, like z-scan, 2-foci, spectral, two-color fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS), fluorescence lifetime imaging, fluorescence solvent relaxation technique, and dynamic saturation optical microscope (DSOM).The co-applicant and his group will carry out in direct contact with experiment novel molecular dynamics simulations of oxPL in order to characterize at the atomistic level their structural and dynamical properties in aqueous solutions."@en . . . .
