"Wood destroying fungi represent crucial component of the forest ecosystems, because this group of organisms has at its disposal unique lignolytic enzymes, necessary for wood degradation and carbon cyclus. In addition to these enzymes, wood destroying fungi produce wide range of macromolecular substances, mainly polysaccharides, potentially exploitable in medicine. Present-day research is focused primarily on betaglucans. Biodiversity, ecology, and molecular taxonomy of wood destroying fungi from the genera Phellinus, and Inonotus, in the Central Europe region will be examined. Collection of above mentioned fungi will be created, with precise molecular and taxonomical description of each sample, intended for preserving the gene pool. Certain physiological qualities of the cultures in this collection will be tested, and structure and production of the betaglucans will be examined.
