"Generally assumed minor effect of polyploidy on the evolution of plant diversity in Cape province was rejected based on the study of the model genus Oxalis. The project initiates new cytogenetic research in this area. Ploidy variation detected in population of the model genus is unique in the global phylogenetic scale."@en . . . . . . . "Polyploid evolution in the Cape flora: insights from the key geophytic genus"@en . "The project is aimed at a better understanding of evolutionary forces that shape the plant diversity in the Cape flora. Using a wide array of modern biosystematics tools (e.g., sequencing of a single-copy gene and cpDNA, AFLP fingerprints, flow cytometry, karyology, distance-based and geometric morphometrics), we will address the significance of polyploid speciation, whose role in the evolution of the Cape plant biota is still enigmatic. Oxalis obtusa, a taxon with a large intraspecific ploidy variation, will serve as a model system to elucidate the evolutionary history of polyploids and the effect of genome duplication on phenotypic and reproductive traits. We will describe the cytotype distribution at various spatial scales, assess the dynamics of genome duplication (i.e., the number of independent polyploidization events), and reconstruct the phylogeographic history. Cross-disciplinary data integration will provide a new level of understanding of factors driving the radiation in the key geophytic group of the Cape flora."@en .
