Apoptosis in hard tissue homeostasis is apparently caspase dependent, but the complete functional network has not been clarified yet. Our results in caspase-9 and caspase-3 deficient mice show importance of mitochondrial pathway in dental apoptosis. Other components and interactions have not been known yet. Recent findings moreover suggest non-apoptotic roles of apoptotic caspases, particularly in cell differentiation. Therefore, the aim of this project is to provide missing knowledge about engagement of caspases during hard tissue formation related to functional profile of caspases in dental apoptosis and during surrounding bone remodelling, to roles of caspases in non-apoptotic processes in hard tissue dynamics and to alternative mechanisms of cell death in the case of caspase deficiency.
