This project deals with a comparative study on metabolic pathways underlying the processes of energy production and cell defense during maturation and ageing of fish spermatozoa between carp (Cyprinus carpio) and sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus). The spermatozoa of these species are considerably different in terms of duration of sperm motility and sperm structure. The main aim is to investigate metabolic pathway in pre-mature, mature and aged spermatozoa by means of cellular and molecular approaches (biochemical assay of bioenergetic pathways and proteomic analysis). In this regard, factors involved in maintaining spermatozoa in quiescent status with adequate level of nutrients for sperm metabolism and protection of sperm against oxidative attacks will be considered.
