"The development of B cells in primary lymphoid tissues is not described in swine and the course and differentiation pathways of B cell maturation in the circulation are unknown. The purpose of this project is to resolve these issues using advanced molecular biology and cytology techniques that became recently accessible. The direct outcomes of the project will be: 1) to resolve B cells developmental pathways in the bone marrow and characterize B cell development by cell surface markers, 2) to determine the duration of B lymphogenesis in primary lymphoid organs, 3) to localize the site of B cell lymphogenesis, 4) to resolve whether B cell development in fetal liver in comparison with bone marrow differs, 5) to characterize the individual functional stages of B cells maturation in circulation that include immature, transitional, mature, activated, antibody forming, memory and plasma cells and 6) to resolve whether swine use gene conversion. Pigs belong to hoofed mammals that are one of the largest groups on the planet. Knowledge about the development of a significant part of adaptive immunity has clear implications in ecology, wildlife management and agriculture and may be applicable to all higher vertebrates."@en . . .
