"The project focuses on psychosocial development during emerging adulthood (ages 18-25). An emphasis is placed on the interaction between the growing autonomy and commitment potential in specific domains of life and on the exploration of the range of the contexts in which autonomy/commitment can be exercised or experienced. A five-year accelerated two-cohort longitudinal study will collect data from ages 18 to 22 and 21 to 25 (N=2 x 500). In the 4th year data will be collected also from the ELSPAC sample for which there are life-long data available. The quantitative backbone will be strengthened by several qualitative studies focused on the construction and relevance of autonomy and commitment. Developmental trajectories will be related to possible antecedents (e.g. personality, relationships to significant others or events) from the prior periods (retrospective data) and concurrent moderators and mediators of development.
