"Lyme disease is a serious human illness caused by spirochetes of the complex Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. Ticks of the genus Ixodes are competent vectors of this disease. In contrast, ticks of the genus Dermacentor are incompetent to serve as vectors of this disease. Furthermore, they are able to effectively eliminate spirochetes from their body using humoral factor(s) of innate immunity. The major goal of the proposed project is to discover new antimicrobial proteins and peptides (AMPs) involved in the immune responses of European ticks Ixodes ricinus and Dermacentor marginatus. The main emphasis will be dedicated to searching and testing of new AMPs from Lyme disease incompetent vector tick that is presumed to possess a borreliacidal protein/peptide.
