"In this project we plan to investigate the morphology and dynamics of luminal discharge of cellular components, referred as apocrine secretion, a so far poorly understood mechanism of secretion. In this study we will use Drosophila melanogaster and analyze its salivary glands. Their major function is to produce glue that helps the pupariating larva to hold on a solid support. In a second phase the glands are programmed to degenerate. The final part of the program involves a rapid activation of cell death genes and caspases, but prior to histolysis the salivary glands undergo a relatively lengthwise process of selective release of cellular components without impairing transcription and protein synthesis, which resembles an apocrine process. We will use advanced genetic, molecular, proteomic, and morphological tools to characterize this luminal or apocrine discharge and identify regulatory elements. These data should provide valuable insights into the mechanism of apocrine (or apocrine-like) secretion occurring in Drosophila salivary glands and thus in other organisms."@en . . "6"^^ .
