"Earth magnetosphere is formed by interaction of the Earth magnetic field with the solar wind that brings the interplanetary magnetic field and internal field into contact. The interaction creates two boundaries bow shock and magnetopause. For quiet conditions, the basic features of this interaction are known but the solar wind carries a variety of waves and discontinuities and understanding of their influence on formation of the boundaries and transport of the solar wind across them still requires experimental and theoretical effort. We plan to use all available data for at least one solar cycle to: (1) development of new (or modification of already existing) bow shock and magnetopause models, (2) classification of interplanetary discontinuities and determination of their occurrence rate, (3) comparison of the near-Earth observation with those propagated from upstream monitors and determination of the prediction probability for different classes, (4) detailed investigation of modification of discontinuities at the bow shock and interaction with the magnetopause."@en . .
