"This proposal arises from a long-term involvement of the applicant in one of the worldwide known research teams in the area of boron cluster chemistry, i.e. in the Department of Syntheses of the ASCR, v.v.i. His employement and development structural methods for characterization of such materials represents the main subject of his work. This proposal is based on various possible pathways to get an unique\u00A0icosahedral (closo-C3B9H12)(+) with different positions of carbon atoms within a deformed icosahedron, belonging to the family of the so-called weakly-coordinated cations, and similar tricarba cations, in which three carbon atoms occupy positions in closo frameworks of smaller dimensions. An additional step consists in linking the cation obtained with weakly-coordinated anions such as (closo-CB11H12)(-)\u00A0in order to get a molecular rod. Structural data will be obtained by the well-established ab initio (DFT)/GIAO/NMR method as well as by diffraction methods both in the solid state (X-ray beam) and in the gas-phase (electron beam). Of the shared icosahedra through a metal, the main attention will be paid to such systems that have unpaired electrons in metal.
