"Project was focused on proteins involved in a proteolytic system of ticks using structural biochemistry and proteomic approaches. Research on three proteases will continue within the CSF grant starting in 2013. Results were published in a form of 5 research articles (majority in excellent journals) and one review. Goals of the project were fulfilled."@en . "1"^^ . . "The proteolytic systems of parasitic ticks are critical for effective interaction with the host. This project is focused on (i) protease inhibitors from tick saliva that suppress host defenses, and (ii) proteases from the tick gut that digest host blood. Recently, we discovered and cloned a panel of these proteins from the main European tick Ixodes ricinus. The intended research will provide their structure-activity analysis based on spatial structures determined by X-ray crystallography, and functional properties identified by substrate/inhibitor specificity profiling. The proteins characterized by this project represent potential targets for efficient vaccines protecting against ticks and the transmission of tick-borne pathogens."@en . .
