"The proposed research is aimed at determining and evaluating the key issues involved in desorption and ionization processes involved in desorption nanoelectrospray, desorption atmospheric pressure chemical ionization, desorption atmospheric pressure photoionization and continuous flow-extractive desorption electrospray. The yield of ions will be correlated with spraying liquid properties (volatility, surface tension, conductivity, permittivity, interaction with analytes, flow-rate) and the surface carrying a sample (hydrophobicity, conductivity, adsorption activity, morphology). Monitoring the extent of sample erosion, dimensions of sampling area, current variation and temperature distribution will also contribute to understanding the processes in ion sources. Matrix effects will be evaluated and sampling using fast and easy preconcentration techniques will be developed.
