"The main goal of the proposed research project is the finding of novel methods for contactless non-invasive analysis of living microorganisms (bacteria and eukaryotic cells) under relevant environmental conditions. The microorganisms suspended in liquidmedia or adherent to a solid substrate will be identified and characterized via their Raman scattering spectra that will serve as the finger prints of the cellular type and physiological state. Combination of Raman spectroscopy with optical micromanipulation and microfluidic platform will then allow carryingout this analysis on the single cell level and studying the response ofmicroorganisms to well-defined external stimuli or stress factors. Experimental data will be analyzed with appropriate data-processing algorithms and used for generating spectral library of microorganisms. Obtained results will greatly aid in fast reagent-free identification of microorganisms in the analyzed samples and assessment of their infectious potential, thus promoting the development of more efficient strategies for the infection treatment."@en .
