"Conventional materials are often unable to meet properties required for certain high-tech applications. One possible solution is utilization of the functionally graded materials (FGM). FGMs are characterized by their properties change across the materials volume as a result of gradients in chemical composition or microstructure. Wider exploitation of FGM depends on availability of dedicated production techniques. Regardless the worldwide effort in the field of FGM, there are still many open questions of the basic character conditioning development of new production technologies. The aim of the proposed project is to explain basic physical and chemical processes in material microvolume taking place on the interfaces of various FGM components during deposition. The properties of FGM are predetermined by the mentioned processes and their interactions. The focus is on the study of sandwich FGM consisting of both metallic and ceramic layers deposited by combination of three techniques: plasma spraying, spark plasma sintering and physical vapor deposition."@en .
