"The proposed project focuses on fabrication, structuring and modification of various nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) forms and study of their interaction with bacteria. The diamond will be employed in the form of nanoparticles, electrospun PVA polymer fibers containing the diamond nanoparticles, porous structures, nanorods, and planar films on glass and silicon substrates. Ultrasonication, spincoating, electrospinning, linear-antenna microwave plasma CVD process, ion etching and plasma treatments will be used to prepare and structurally/chemically modify these diamond forms. All the diamond forms will be used as support for growth of grampositive and gramnegative bacteria in liquid cultures and on agar. We will systematically evaluate expected bactericidal properties of the diamonds as indicated from our preliminary experiments. We will correlate these results with material, structural and chemical properties of the diamond forms. This fundamental study will provide a new view on interactions of diamond in biological environment and thus creates basis for possible novel applications."@en .
