"The aim of the grant is to elucidate the functioning of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in the uptake and translocation of heavy metals in plants growing in contaminated soils of ore sedimentation ponds and waste materials from metallurgical factory. Effect of symbiosis with native AMF isolates on uptake and accumulation of heavy metals (Mn, Zn, Al, Pb) of the grass species Calamagrostis epigejos naturally occurring in degraded ecosystems will be studied in long-term cultivation experiment. Adapted vs. non-adapted ecotypes of C. epigejos will be cultivated in contaminated soil in the rhizobox system enabling detection of transport of heavy metals between plants by means of the soil extraradical mycelium of the AMF. In the three-seasons experiment, development of mycorrhizal symbiosis and its effect on plant growth, heavy metals uptake and translocation in plant tissues will be evaluated.
