"Soil acidification in the Czech Republic presents a problem especially in mountainous areas. In consequence to forest damage due to immissions, or due to bark-beetle calamities, clear-cut areas established in the top parts of the Czech mountains. The spruce forests were spontaneously replaced by grass vegetation (mainly Calamagrostis villosa) that leads to changes in soil chemical properties. Moreover, liming was applied on a part of the immission clear-cut areas, which also changes chemical properties of soils. The objectives of this project include comparison of soil characteristics under grass cover on or calamity clear-cut areas with the characteristics of adjacent soils under surviving forests and an assessment of the depth of the changes in soil profile caused by the grass cover. Another objective is to evaluate the effect of liming on the changes of chemical soil properties under grass cover on the immission clear-cut areas.
