"The proposed project deals with the importance of nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide and methan formation in and emission from the soils under permanent grazed grasslands. The project is thus related to a more general issue of the emissions of trace of greenhouse gases, their role in atmospheric chemistry and their global impacts. The main part of the project is focused on denitrification and nitrification, the two major nitrous oxide producing processes in most soils, and on their main regulatory and control factors. Pastures represent specific type of ecosystems influenced substantially by the animals. It is proposed that processes of nitrogen (and other elements) transformations are related to soil compaction and inputs of nutrients in urine and dungs. The project is thus focused on studies of the role of some relevant factors and likely important soil and environmental preperties, including soil pH, and aeration and water status.
