"Synthetic dyes represent an important source of environmental pollution. Some dyes exhibit biotoxic and genotoxic properties. Wastewater treatment plants are not able to remove dyes from water effluents efficiently. Thus an urgent need for development ofnew technologies capable of removal of dyes from contaminated water and soils exists. Bioremediation processes are an ecological and cost-competitive alternative to physico-chemical processes. Ligninolytic fungi using broad-specificity enzyme systems areable to decompose various types of molecules. As a result they are expected to efficiently degrade a wide range of industrial dyes. The project represents a complex approach to the dye pollution problem including: a screening of fungal strains, a selection of strains based on their ability to degrade a representative spectrum of industrial dyes and a testing of the ability of the most powerful strain to clean up industrial wastewaters and soils.
