They act as mediators in interactions between a plant and its environmental partners \u2013 pathogens, symbionts etc. Numerous isoflavonoids are pharmacologically active compounds. They occur typically in the Fabaceae family, where they are synthesized by the enzymes belonging to the CYP93B2 family \u2013 isoflavone synthases. Isoflavones were recorded in additional 60 families, some of which are phylogenetically distant from the Fabaceae. However, in some cases the reports are sporadic. We have previously described the occurance of isoflavonoids in the Myrtaceae, the Rutaceae and the Lamiaceae families and in model organisms considered to be isoflavones nonproducers lacking isoflavone synthesizing enzymes (namely Arabidopsis thaliana and Nicotiana tabacum). The aim of this project is the biochemical and bioinformatical screening of isoflavonoid metabolic pathway(s) in multicellular plants in order to replenish the konwledge about the occurance of this metabolic pathway in the Plant Kingdom. Detailed knowledge of phytochemistry is the important prerequisite for understanding ecological relations as well as for estimation of nutritional or pharmacological value of plants."@en .
