"The agricultural production environment, such as indoor environment in pig farms, can be contaminated with many, largely unidentified, organic aromatic compounds. Apart from genotoxic effects of a limited number of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs), relatively little is known about toxic effects of these contaminants, which could have deleterious impact on both animal and human health. The proposed project aims to identify these aromatic contaminants (large series of PAHs and theirderivatives, heterocyclic aromatics including indols, azaarenes, and thiophenes and/or other aromatics). Moreover, the project will aim to characterize in vitro toxic effects of the prevailing compounds, with emphasis on nongenotoxic effects leading toendocrine disruption and promotion of carcinogenesis, such as dioxin-like toxicity, estrogenic/antiestrogenic activity, modulation of intercellular communication and deregulation of cytokinetics in model cell populations.
