"Postischemic damages after intestinal ischemia and reperfusion are of growing clinical relevance in both human and veterinary medicine. Recently, the central role of oxygen derived free radicals in ischemia/reperfusion injury has been demonstrated. The main objective of the project will be the evaluation of the role of xanthine/xanthine oxidase system of endothelial cells in the balance between oxidants and antioxidants in the model of rat intestinal ischemia/reperfusion. The experiments will be aimedto find out which endogenous extracellular antioxidant(s) is(are) responsible for the increase of total antioxidant capacity of serum during intestinal ischemia/reperfusion. Total antioxidant capacity and individual endogenous extracellular antioxidants (uric acid, albumin, bilirubin, ceruloplasmin, thiols) will be evaluated in blood serum samples obtained at the end of the ischemic period and at different intervals of reperfusion.
