"Normal wound healing is a carefully controlled balance of new tissue formation and destructive processes necessary to remove damaged tissue. In some pathologic settings, persistent or excessive inflammation may interfere with wound healing. The hypothesis that a phagocyte- derived oxidative stress could occur and participate in the pathophysiology of wound healing seems to be attractive. This study is designed to determine whether or not reactive oxygen and nitrogen species produced by professional phagocytes could modify an extracellular collagen. On the other hand, the effects of natural and oxidatively modified collagen on platelets and neutrophils will be compared. The hypothesis that collagen, platelets and neutrophils cooperate to modulate the oxidative burst of phagocytes and the extent of oxidative stress will be tested. The expected benefits should be seen both in the contribution to the current knowledge and in the application in both veterinary and human medicine."@en . " platelets" .
