"Microsporidia are obligate eukaryotic intracellular parasites. Two groups of mammalian microsporidia can be distinguished: i/ species using mammals as their true hosts, ii/ a group of %22opportunistic microsporidia%22, evidently having some other hosts than mammals, but able to infect them accidentally. Only a few studies have been conducted to determine the source and mode of transmission of species from the second group in humans/mammals. Selected microsporidia will be studied in vivo (using SCID mice as the model mimicking immunosupressed mammals) and in vitro in cell/tissue cultures of both vertebrate and invertebrate origin. Temperature preferences of individual species/strains will be studied in order to understand the circumstances of transmission from invertebrates to humans/mammals. Experimental insect models will be used to test the infectivity of the battery of the selected microsporidia for insects, including blood sucking and synanthropic insects.
