Clinical coccidiosis of poultry, ruminants and other animals affects not only their health status but also, in general, the economy of animal production. So far, onlylimited number of species were studied experimentally and research of coccidia suffers from the absence of adequate models for the experimental infections. Experimental model studies on rodent coccidia are limited to a few, highly host-specific species.The main aim of our project is critical evaluation of further model infections with species of Eimeria from rodent genera Mastomys and Acomys. Species of Eimeria found in Mastomys natalensis represents, because of its wide spectrum of experimental rodenthosts, an optimal model for future experimental studies.
